This picture was taken from a series of photos taken in Japan in the 19th century. The website has no descriptive material attached to it. For various reasons I would date the photos to the middle of the century, 1860s or so.
Note that even then some people sported full-body tattoos in Japan. These are not prisoner's tattoos, these are a civilian's idea of a good time.
